Smalltalk:Big Ideas – AMBER @Science Week 2024

12 November 2024

AMBER, CRANN, Trinity East and Unit18 were delighted to be successfully awarded funding for ‘Smalltalk – Big Ideas’ as part of Science Week which is taking place across Ireland from 10th-17th November 2024.

‘Smalltalk – Big Ideas’ aligned with the theme of ‘small talk leading to big ideas’, this novel, inclusive and innovative event comprised of 3 interactive elements, to inform, inspire and engage attendees:

  • There was a ‘Smalltalk’ short story collection launch (in partnership with Fighting Words);
  • An intergenerational co-creation workshop; and
  • A hands-on citizen science ‘regeneration’ activity – this was a planting activity utilising 3D printed pots which participants could take home

Visual artist Robyn Deasy was in attendance to developing in real time the physical artefacts with the digital artefacts to follow. Fighting Words facilitated the creation of AMBER Centre’s first collection of “Smalltalk” story books, which were launched at the event: “Something’s Missing” authored by Becky Hackett, Giulio Brunetti & Jamie Somers & illustrated by Philip Elliott; and “Quantum Quest” authored by Mark Mitchison Khalak Mahadeviya & Saulo Moreira & illustrated by Brigid Sweeney.

Sadhbh Crean led a lively & engaging co-creation workshop on the past/present/future of science. Aslı Çoban & Jessica De Micco of NXTGENWOOD provided the bespoke 3-D printed biodegradable pots for the activity “plant our ideas” using hazel nuts from the local trees on Pearse St. gathered by Penny Storey

The event was announced as part of the launch of Science Week by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O’Donovan TD on Monday 30th September with Research Ireland.
