Scientific Advice Mechanism formally hands over its scientific advice on advanced materials

22 April 2026

The importance of Materials Science and Advanced Materials to Ireland and Europe – worth a read!

The Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) provides independent scientific evidence and policy recommendations to the College of European Commissioners on any subject, including on policy issues that the European Parliament and the Council consider to be of major importance. This report highlights ‘Advanced Materials and why Europe’s strategic autonomy may well depend on how it approaches them.’

According to SAM: ‘Advanced materials are fundamental to Europe’s competitiveness, autonomy, and resilience. They are essential for the green and digital transitions. And yet Europe’s fragmented cross-border economic ecosystems weaken its ability to compete with concentrated advanced materials manufacturing hubs elsewhere.

The SAM’s scientific advice, delivered to Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva on 22 April 2026 in support of the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act, provides recommendations on how advanced materials can support EU strategic autonomy, and on how the cross-fertilisation of innovation can be enhanced in this sector.’
