AMBER at launch of the National Semiconductor Strategy

19 May 2025

The launch of the National Semiconductor Strategy is highly welcome in terms of delivering growth of an important sector of the Irish industry landscape. It recognises the importance of the sector in delivering and continuing to develop Ireland’s economic goals.

The strategy provides a detailed appraisal of the strength and weaknesses of the semiconductor sector and identifies the key needs for continued growth. Particularly welcome is the recognition of the need for research through the academic sector through to industry. It recognises the need for research at low technology readiness levels (materials development and discovery, understanding atomic arrangements and advanced subjects such as quantum science) through to pilot line and manufacturing.

Materials innovation is critical to the next generation of semiconductor devices. Consequently electronics has been identified as a European priority through the Innovative Advanced Materials for Europe Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), which will shape future research policy in this area under Horizon Europe. AMBER was proud to have played a leading role in drafting this SRIA, and we’re equally pleased to see these priorities echoed in Ireland’s National Semiconductor Strategy, recognising the need for a connected ecosystem from academia to industry, and the vital role Centres like AMBER play in driving innovation and delivering world-class technologies.

The establishment of an Advisory Council on the Semiconductor Sector to drive the strategy forward is a very welcome step. As we look ahead, aligning this ambition with dedicated Government funding will be key to fully realising the strategy’s potential and building a world-class semiconductor ecosystem

AMBER’s Business Development Manager Denise Carthy and AMBER Researcher Farzan Gity were in attendance at the at the launch on Monday 19th May in Tyndall National Institute by Minister Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke.
