Martin Naughton (1939-2026).

7 July 2026

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Martin Naughton.

In recent days, many well-deserved tributes have highlighted his extraordinary achievements as a pioneering entrepreneur, visionary business leader, and generous philanthropist, both in Ireland and internationally. Within the nanoscience and materials science community, we were particularly fortunate to benefit from Dr. Naughton’s vision, commitment, and support in the establishment of the CRANN Institute in 2007, which has since become a cornerstone of Ireland’s international leadership in these fields.   Martin Naughton’s philanthropic investment was both transformative and enabling in securing and delivering the original CRANN Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) award. His support led to the construction of the Naughton Institute, providing the essential infrastructure for a purpose-built research centre dedicated to world-class research in nanoscience and advanced materials, postgraduate education, international collaboration, and engagement with industry. The impact of this investment continues to underpin the success of CRANN and AMBER today.

The Naughton Institute was also home to the Science Gallery, which for more than fifteen years provided an innovative and internationally acclaimed platform for public engagement with science. Its success inspired a model that has since been replicated around the world, bringing science and creativity to new and diverse audiences.

Dr. Naughton’s contribution to the scientific community will endure through many researchers who continue to pass through our laboratories and facilities each year. His vision helped create an environment in which discovery, collaboration, and innovation flourish, sustaining Ireland’s global reputation in nanoscience and advanced materials research.

On behalf of everyone at CRANN and AMBER, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Naughton family, his many friends, colleagues, and all those who have benefitted from his enduring commitment to education, research, and society.
