AMBER Researcher named on Forbes 30 under 30 Science & Healthcare List!

21 April 2026

AMBER Research Rachel Beatty has been named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list for Science & Healthcare. Rachel’s research into “soft robotics” led to the development of medical implants that have a lower risk of being mistakenly attacked by the immune system.

Her recent publication with AMBER PI Garry Duffy and colleague Prof Ellen Roche of MIT detailed a new breakthrough in medical device technology that could lead to intelligent, long-lasting, tailored treatment for patients thanks to soft robotics and artificial intelligence.

The transatlantic partnership has created a smart implantable device that can administer a drug – while also sensing when the body is beginning to reject it – and use AI to change its shape of the device to maintain drug dosage, simultaneously bypassing scar tissue build up and maintaining treatment. The study was published in the journal Science Robotics.

For more than a decade, Forbes has highlighted young scientists and entrepreneurs for our annual 30 Under 30 list, with the help of nominations from the public. The nominees were evaluated by a panel of judges featuring Alexandre Momeni, a London-based partner at VC firm General Catalyst; Volodymyr Levykin, founder and CEO of British rocket company Skyrora; Felicia von Reden, cofounder and CEO of fertility startup Ovom Care and an alumna of the 2025 Under 30 Europe list; and Audrey Duval, head of global corporate affairs at French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi.
