Watch Back -AMBER Exec Director Lorraine Byrne at Techonomy22

28 November 2022

AMBER’s Executive Director Lorraine Byrne attended Techonomy22 in November 2022. Speaking on the panel ‘How sustainable innovation is thriving in Europe’ with Maeve Cowley of IDA Ireland Vice President, Engineering & Green Economy.

Lorraine highlighted AMBER’s ongoing work with industry in the area of sustainability and circular economy such as:

  • Improving recyclability of PET
  • Sourcing PET alternatives such as waste and wood pulp
  • Improving battery capacity by integrating nanomaterials
  • ICT – computer chips work the same way they did 80 years ago – AMBER is working on issue of decoupling memory & logic – developing high performance semi-conductor materials that will allow vertical stacking of memory and logic which in turn will reduce energy consumption of chips and overall server and infrastructure energy consumption

“Ireland has a small country advantage and we are very well inter connected.” “16 SFI centres in different fields, to do something trans-disciplinary, it’s very easy to assemble a group of scientists together to solve that problem.”

“We have an innate ability to bring people together quickly” – Lorraine Byrne, Techonomy22
