Vacancies

AMBER has a central role in improving the scientific and technical skills of the current and future workforce. We recruit the best and the brightest from across the globe to deliver on our mission of research excellence that brings solutions to societal and industrial challenges. Researchers trained in AMBER develop a broad skill base that reflects the needs of industry, as well as supporting those researchers who wish to follow an academic career path. AMBER provides our researchers with opportunities to work with companies, gaining valuable appreciation of the culture of product development, as well as exposure to business and management processes that are industry-relevant, creating a broad skills base that matches the needs of industry. For our postdoctoral and early career researcher (ESR) cohort interested in remaining in academia, our funding team collaborates with other SFI Centres in TCD to deliver a Pathways to Funding training programme annually to prepare individuals to apply for independent research funding.

OPEN POSITIONS

Research Fellow position for the following project

Research and Development of polymer materials and polymer composites as lubricious materials for catheters.

This is a research focused role collaborating with an Industry partner, where the candidate will conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator, Prof. Larisa Florea (Trinity College Dublin), Cyril Tuohy, R&D Senior manager, Stryker Neurovascular and Dr. Cormac O’Keeffe, Principal Engineer at Stryker.

Summary of project:
Stryker’s Neurovascular division strives to propel the field of stroke care through continuous, purposeful innovation that powers meaningful outcomes. Focused on advancing the practice of less invasive stroke therapies through its Complete Stroke Care solutions, Stryker is dedicated to providing best-in-class solutions for ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke care, education, and clinical support. Products include stent retriever, detachable coils, stents, balloons, guidewires and microcatheters. Currently, many catheter coatings are based on PTFE. Utilising PTFE material has inherent drawbacks in med device application like intermediate catheters due to inherit mechanical properties of PTFE. This project is looking for alternatives that can improve product performance.

A focus will be placed on polymer materials and composites that can offer comparable coefficient of friction and wear properties to PTFE, excellent processability, while also optimising mechanical properties required for optimum catheter performance. The project aims to achieve, through novel coatings materials, improved control and manipulation of the catheters during surgical procedures.
Requirements: Suitable candidates would have a PhD in Materials Science/Materials Engineering or related disciplines.

Desired abilities:
• Previous laboratory experience in polymer research is essential.
• Experience with polymer characterization techniques including mechanical testing, rheology, tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, microscopy, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, DSC, AFM (essential)
• Experience with polymer processing and specimen fabrication protocols such as extrusion, dip-coating, spin coating, injection molding and curing (essential).
• Excellent data organising and analysis skills (essential).
• Experience in polymer synthesis (desirable).
• Proven record of clear scientific thinking (desirable).
How to Apply: Applicants should submit to FLOREAL@TCD.IE a full Curriculum Vitae, to include the names and contact details of 2 referees (including email addresses) and a motivation letter detailing their suitability for the current project and clear matching between their prior expertise & skills and the project requirements.
Positions will remain open until filled but preferred start date is as soon as possible. Only short-listed applications will be acknowledged.
This position is funded by AMBER, SFI Research Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research & CRANN Institute.

The AMBER research centre, as a community of researchers, welcomes its responsibility to provide equal opportunities for all. We are actively seeking diversity in our research teams and particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups.
