Prof David Hoey received a BAI, BA (honours) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Dublin, Trinity College in 2005. In 2009 he received his PhD in Bioengineering from the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering, Trinity College in the area of Biomaterials. After his PhD, he received an IRCSET Marie-Curie COFUND award to facilitate his postdoctoral research in the area of Bone Mechanobiology with Prof. Chris Jacobs in Columbia University in the City of New York from 2009-2011 and in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in the area of Regenerative Medicine with Prof. Fergal O’Brien from 2011-2012. In 2012 he accepted his first independent position in the University of Limerick where he was shortly awarded a €1.5M starting grant from the European Research Council to continue his work in bone mechanobiology and mechanotransduction. In 2015 he joined the University of Dublin, Trinity College as an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering.

Prof. Hoey’s work in AMBER includes deciphering the mechanisms of stem cell mechanotransduction in bone and utilisation of this knowledge, in combination with advanced melt electrospinning writing biofabrication technology, to develop novel biomechano-mimetic materials for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration.
