Daniel Kelly received his BA, BAI and PhD from Trinity College Dublin and joined the School of Engineering as a lecturer in 2005. He is now associate professor and director of the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering. In 2008 he was the recipient of a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA). In 2009 he received a Fulbright Award to take a position as a Visiting Research Scholar at the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Columbia University, New York. In 2010 he was awarded a European Research Council starter grant to develop novel stem cell based therapies to regenerate damaged articular cartilage. He was recently awarded a €1.7m Principal Investigator grant from SFI to develop novel tissue engineering approaches to treat degenerative joint disease.

Prof. Kelly’s research focuses on developing novel approaches to regenerating damaged and diseased musculoskeletal tissues. He is leader of the AMBER biomaterials platform, the aim of which is to investigate how the physical and chemical properties of a biomaterial, as well as the therapeutic factors it delivers, determines the host response to such an implant. The outputs from this program will be combined with those from the 2D Materials Platform to develop the next generation of implants targeting specific clinical problems in orthopaedic and cardiovascular medicine.
