Dr Ed Lavelle graduated with a BSc in Microbiology from University College Galway in 1990 and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Plymouth in 1994. He carried our postdoctoral research at the University of Nottingham on nano and microparticles as vaccine adjuvants. This was followed by further postdoctoral positions at the Rowett Research Institute (Aberdeen) and Trinity College Dublin on vaccine adjuvants and immunomodulators. He was appointed as a lecturer in Immunology in 2004, senior lecturer in 2012 and is a Principal Investigator in the School of Biochemistry and Immunology. His research focuses on the development and mode of action of particulate adjuvants for injectable and mucosal vaccines. The group works closely with a number of Biotech companies and Pharma engaged in vaccine research.

Dr Lavelle’s work in AMBER concerns (1) the relationship between the physicochemical properties of biomaterials and their capacity to induce inflammatory and wound healing responses and (2) the development of innovative oral capsule (SmPill®) systems for oral vaccines. This work is a collaboration with Sigmoid Pharma Ltd, an innovative drug delivery company based in Dublin.
